Wedding Dress Shopping: 5 Tips for a Successful Experience

Casey Simon Photography

Wedding dress shopping is a thrilling experience, but it can also be overwhelming. With so many styles, designers, and options to choose from, it's important to approach this process with a plan. Here are 5 tips to help you find the perfect wedding dress and make the most of your shopping experience.

1. Start Early

Give yourself plenty of time to find the perfect dress. Most brides-to-be start shopping for a wedding dress 9 to 12 months before their wedding date. Gowns typically take anywhere from 4-10 months just to be made. This will give you plenty of time to find the right dress, make any necessary alterations, and take care of all the details. Don’t have that kind of time? Some designers offer rush services, but be prepared to pay an extra fee. Out of timely options? If you’re lucky enough to fit in sample sizes, salons often allow brides to buy samples off the rack for a lower price. This usually happens when they are salons are getting rid of last seasons gowns.

2. Know Your Budget

Determine your budget before you start shopping. This will help you narrow down your options and avoid getting caught up in a dress you can't afford. Only try on dresses that are in your budget. Otherwise this can lead to heartbreak and disappointment. Make sure to factor in the cost of any alterations, accessories, veil, and shoes you may need, as well.

3. Do Your Research

Research different styles and designers before you start shopping. Look for inspiration on social media, wedding blogs, and bridal magazines. Make a list of your favorite styles and designers, and take it with you when you go dress shopping.

4. Be Open-Minded

Be open-minded when you start trying on dresses. You may have a specific style in mind, but be willing to try on different styles and designs. You may be surprised by how you look in a dress you never considered before.

5. Bring Your Bride Squad

This is important! Remember to bring those whose opinions you value and trust. Because this is already a bit of a stressful event for you. They can offer honest opinions and help you stay focused on your goals. However, it's also important to remember to make the final decision on your own and choose a dress that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
